What Was 2009 Steel 10' x 10' x 7'
|
For this installation I used steel from the Atlantic Yards site which is directly across the street from the Soapbox Gallery. The steel was part of the Wards Bakery building that was torn down. It was in the concrete floors of the building. As they demolished the building and broke up the concrete the steel bent into these wonderful lines and arcs. The elegance and natural flow of the heavy rigid steel seemed an appropriate metaphor for the tension created by the Atlantic Yards Project. (The struggle is between the local community and the big developers of the Atlantic Yards Site. The community wants a development that is on a human and humane scale and is relevant and meaningful and the developer needs to turn a profit with high-density high rises.) |
